The PHEM training program consists of pre-requisite training, a five-day in-resident course, and a continuing education program that includes several courses currently offered by the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute and Service and Combatant Command continuing education opportunities. Upon completion of the training, personnel should have the knowledge and/or training to enable them to perform critical tasks needed to meet real-world requirements. This standardized, joint-offered course will ensure that PHEOs and MEMs can operate in a variety of environments, including other service's installations and facilities, an issue of increasing concern due to Joint Basing Initiatives. The Public Health Emergency Management training program will provide PHEOs and MEMs with the knowledge and skills they need to ensure that the DOD is ready to respond to public health emergencies and assist civilian and host nation authorities when called upon.
